finding shore

"they say if you believe the world is throbbing with wonder,
then it is, they say in old stories that you cant discover new
lands without losing sight of the shore for a long time.
i say, if you believe in the wonder
you'll find your shore. ~ laurie gough, kite stings

blessed and cursed with deep curiousity and the need for adventure,
ive always been one with an overwhelming desire to take off and travel
by myself to strange and unfamiliar places. my life doesnt
really support that type of lifestyle anymore, so my little get aways
are less dramatic and not as long...

the other day when i was driving home i missed my exit and ended up
way out in the boonies. i was finally able to exit off the highway and discovered
a road called Peace. feeling in need of a little of that, i followed that road and it carried me along tired old cornfields. i was hoping for something a bit more exciting, but no go.
i pulled the car over and decided to go tromp.... because after all, the temp was in the 50's and thats as close to summer as one can get mid february. as i walked through the muddy field, i heard a rumble of squaking ~ i wasnt aware that i was walking into a field in which hundreds of geese were resting.

i didnt mean to, but my presence must have startled them.
and then, all at once,
just as if a large blanket was being lifted over my head ~ the birds took flight.
all of them. hundreds upon hundreds all around me.
it was loud, and i could hear their wings in the wind, and it was like a bird tornado. half concerned i would be the victim of getting shit upon, i covered my head. ( i was lucky )
i couldnt help but start to giggle. it was crazy beautiful ~ all those wings and all that hooting. i noticed how my mood had lifted with the wonder of it all.

so maybe i cannot hit the open road and take off for a month to unknown places, but i do have the ability to find wonderous things within 30 minutes from my home. i can still find shore deep in the middle of the midwest.

wishing you your own discovery...
